Musk faces criticism over social media posts amid Belfast riots
Tech billionaire and X owner Elon Musk is facing growing criticism from political leaders and officials in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland over claims that his social media activity contributed to tensions surrounding recent riots in Belfast.
The unrest erupted earlier this week following a stabbing incident in North Belfast that left a man critically injured. Authorities subsequently charged a 30-year-old Sudanese asylum seeker, identified as Hadi Alodid, with attempted murder.
In the aftermath of the attack, videos, images and commentary related to the incident spread rapidly across social media platforms, sparking protests that later descended into violence. Rioters reportedly set vehicles and buses ablaze, damaged businesses, and targeted properties linked to immigrant and ethnic minority communities in several parts of Belfast.
Political leaders have since raised concerns about the role of online platforms in amplifying inflammatory narratives. Critics specifically pointed to activity on X, where Musk engaged with posts related to demonstrations and immigration debates in the United Kingdom.
One of Musk’s posts encouraged continued public demonstrations, while other content he shared focused on concerns about immigration policies and public safety. His comments attracted widespread attention due to his large global following.
Northern Ireland Justice Minister Naomi Long condemned efforts by influential public figures to inflame tensions during a sensitive period.
Speaking to local media, Long said individuals with large platforms have a responsibility to promote calm and avoid rhetoric that could deepen divisions within communities already dealing with heightened tensions.
Similarly, Claire Hanna, leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party, strongly condemned the attacks on minority communities and described the violence as racially motivated.
The family of the stabbing victim also appealed for restraint, urging the public not to exploit the incident to fuel hostility against immigrants. In a statement, relatives praised the contributions of migrant communities to sectors such as healthcare and hospitality and called for unity during the ongoing investigation.
Musk has rejected suggestions that he or his platform were responsible for the disturbances. He has maintained that concerns over immigration policy, rather than social media activity, are the primary factors driving public anger and unrest.
The riots have reignited debates about the influence of social media platforms in shaping public discourse, particularly during periods of heightened social and political tension. Authorities continue to investigate the violence, while community leaders have called for dialogue and restraint to prevent further disorder.
The unrest comes as Musk remains one of the world’s most influential technology figures, with his social media posts frequently attracting international attention and scrutiny.
