NAFDAC clarifies sachet alcohol ban: Temporary lifting ends December 2025
“There is a ministerial lifting on the ban of sachet alcohol, but it is only temporary and will be reviewed by Dec. 31, 2025. After this date, the full enforcement of the ban will commence.”
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has provided clarity on the nationwide ban on sachet alcohol, stating that the recent ministerial lifting of the restriction is only temporary and will expire on December 31, 2025.
Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of the FCT Directorate of the agency, informed the press in Abuja on Monday that the public should disregard any misinformation suggesting a permanent reversal of the ban.
“There is a ministerial lifting on the ban of sachet alcohol, but it is only temporary and will be reviewed by Dec. 31, 2025. After this date, the full enforcement of the ban will commence.”
Azikiwe explained that the temporary reprieve was granted by the minister to allow manufacturers and regulators sufficient time to collaborate on a more structured and effective implementation of the ban.
He also highlighted NAFDAC’s ongoing nationwide sensitization efforts to educate the public about the ban and responsible alcohol consumption.

“We have sensitised distributors, and we’ve emphasised that alcohol should not be sold to individuals under the age of 18, which is also clearly indicated on product labels,” he added.
Azikiwe commended the Distillers and Beverages Association of Nigeria (DIBAN) for their support in the agency’s awareness campaigns.
He reassured the public of NAFDAC’s unwavering commitment to regulating alcohol consumption and reiterated that sachet alcohol products containing less than 200 milliliters would be completely phased out after December 2025.
