NAFDAC issues safety alert over counterfeit Cowbell milk in circulation
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachet milk in markets across the country, raising concerns over serious health and safety risks.
In an alert published on its official website on Friday, the agency disclosed that Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, authorised manufacturer of the Cowbell brand, had reported the discovery of fake products bearing close resemblance to its genuine Cowbell “Our Milk” sachets.
According to NAFDAC, the counterfeit products feature unauthorised use of the Cowbell brand name, packaging design, NAFDAC registration number, and trademark.

The agency noted that the fake packaging being used was last employed by Promasidor in September 2023, confirming that the imitations were not produced or distributed by the company.
The agency provided key details to help consumers differentiate between the genuine and counterfeit products: Genuine Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachet: Packaging uses the revised PNG artwork “Our Creamy Goodness”; Batch details printed with laser printing; Coding appears only in the designated coding area; Sealing and cutting on vertical sides are automated; Content is creamy and consistent with milk.
NAFDAC warned that consumption of counterfeit milk could pose severe health risks, including foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions, organ damage, or even death in extreme cases. Vulnerable groups such as infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly are at particular risk.
The agency has directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct immediate surveillance and mop-up of the counterfeit sachets in circulation.
NAFDAC further urged distributors, retailers, and consumers to be vigilant, ensuring that all food products are obtained only from authorised manufacturers and licensed suppliers. Consumers were advised to always check the authenticity and physical condition of products before purchase.
The agency encouraged the public and healthcare professionals to report any suspected cases of substandard or counterfeit food products through the following channels:
NAFDAC assured Nigerians that it remains committed to safeguarding public health and will continue aggressive monitoring of food products to protect consumers from counterfeit and dangerous items.
