Julian Nagelsmann is chasing victory with Bayern Munich in Tuesday’s Super Cup visit to cup winners Borussia Dortmund and could also seal his maiden title as a coach as well.
“We are all trying to finally win,” he said on Monday. “I’m also not used to not winning so many times in a row in my previous positions.
“It would be great for our first trophy of the season to come with our first win.
“It’s an important game against a side who’ve started the league strongly. Of course, we will do everything we can to get that win — it would be a great feeling.”
Nagelsmann, who moved from Bundesliga runners-up RB Leipzig to champions Bayern Munich in summer, saw the league campaign begin with a mixed 1-1 draw at Borussia Moenchengladbach.
He praised the “extreme speed” in the Borussia Dortmund side, something which could cause Bayern Munich problems if they do not defend considerably better than they did on Friday.
Piecing his side together has proved difficult, as internationals returned gradually over summer following Euro 2020 while others have been recovering from injury.
“We (will) have the same squad as we had against Borussia (Moenchengladbach),” he said. “Someone who could return is Corentin Tolisso —- he trained with the under-23s last weekend and did really well.
“Lucas [Hernandez] is training with the ball on the pitch today (Monday). He still needs to build up his fitness. Of course, we want him to be back as quickly as possible, but he needs time.”
Borussia Dortmund also have squad issues for the game which will again be played in front of 25,000 following current coronavirus rules.
Injured or ill players Mats Hummels, Raphael Guerreiro, Emre Can, Thomas Meunier and Julian Brandt have been joined on the sidelines by Thorgan Hazard.
“Thorgan will miss out,” said new coach Marco Rose. “His ankle is swollen after the game against (Eintract) Frankfurt.”
Borussia Dortmund won that game 5-2 in thrilling fashion and a further triumph against Bayern Munich would confirm their good start to the season under Rose.
“It’s the opportunity to collect a title, it’s a prestigous duel,” said Rose. “That’s why we’re taking it seriously even if the conditions are not optimal.”
