Nigeria Police moves to integrate artificial intelligence into modern policing

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has taken a significant step toward modernizing law enforcement operations through the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), following the successful conclusion of the Second AI-POL Leadership Dialogue Workshop on Advancing Innovation, Governance, and the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Law Enforcement.

The high-level workshop, which ended in Abuja on Wednesday, brought together senior law enforcement officials, technology experts, policymakers, and international partners to examine how emerging AI technologies can enhance policing, improve public safety, and strengthen accountability within security institutions.

The dialogue served as a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas on the growing role of artificial intelligence in contemporary law enforcement, with participants exploring practical applications of AI in crime prevention, intelligence gathering, investigations, surveillance, and operational decision-making.

Throughout the workshop, discussions focused on balancing technological innovation with ethical considerations, governance frameworks, and responsible deployment to ensure that AI-driven policing remains transparent, accountable, and respectful of citizens’ rights.

Speaking on the outcome of the event, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, emphasized that artificial intelligence has become a transformative force in global security operations and can no longer be viewed as a futuristic concept.

According to the IGP, deliberations during the workshop reinforced the urgent need for law enforcement agencies to embrace technological advancements in order to remain effective in tackling evolving security threats.

He noted that AI is already reshaping policing models across the world by enhancing efficiency, improving intelligence analysis, and supporting data-driven decision-making.

He further expressed appreciation to participants, facilitators, experts, and development partners whose contributions ensured the success of the dialogue.

The workshop also highlighted lessons from international experiences, allowing participants to examine best practices and identify strategies that could be adapted to Nigeria’s unique policing environment.

One of the major highlights of the event was a special presentation based on the outcomes of the Fifth Global Meeting for AI and Law Enforcement.

The presentation underscored Nigeria’s growing prominence in international discussions on technology-driven policing and revealed that the country has been recognized as a priority partner for the African AI Policing Pilot Programme.

The recognition is expected to open new opportunities for collaboration, capacity building, and the development of AI-powered policing initiatives tailored to address security challenges across the African continent.

Participants were encouraged to translate the knowledge acquired during the workshop into practical reforms within their respective commands and departments. Organizers stressed that the success of the initiative would ultimately depend on how effectively the lessons learned are implemented across the Force.

Security analysts say the dialogue represents a major milestone in the Nigeria Police Force’s ongoing modernization agenda.

They argue that the responsible integration of artificial intelligence could help improve crime detection, enhance operational efficiency, strengthen predictive policing capabilities, and support better resource allocation.

However, experts also caution that the deployment of AI in law enforcement must be accompanied by strong governance structures, clear legal frameworks, robust data protection measures, and continuous oversight to prevent misuse and maintain public trust.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to fostering innovation while ensuring accountability and citizen-centered policing.

The Force also expressed gratitude to local and international partners whose support contributed to the success of the workshop and to ongoing efforts aimed at building safer communities across the country.

The statement was signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Anthony Okon Placid, Force Public Relations Officer, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on June 4, 2026.
