Nigeria to launch building-level digital postcode system October 1
Nigeria is set to begin replacing its decades-old six-digit postcode system with a new National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System from October 1, 2026, introducing unique location codes for individual buildings across the country.
The initiative by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) is designed to address longstanding challenges in locating homes, businesses and public facilities, while creating a digital location layer for deliveries, banking, emergency response, identity verification and government services.
NIPOST estimates that poor addressing costs the Nigerian economy between N50 billion and N80 billion annually through missed and failed deliveries.
Unlike the existing numeric postcode, which generally identifies a broader geographical area, the new system will assign each addressable building an 11-character, machine-readable code linked to its precise geographic location.
The codes will follow a five-level structure: State, Local Government Area, District, Area and Building. An example provided by NIPOST is FC 02 A09 DB 09, with each segment narrowing the location until it identifies a specific building.
The system is GIS-enabled, meaning every postcode will be connected to a mapped geographical location. NIPOST has described it as the first GIS-enabled, building-level addressing system on the African continent.

Postmaster General Tola Odeyemi said the system would be adapted to Nigeria’s diverse geographical conditions rather than applying one uniform mapping model nationwide.
She explained that geographical differences, population density and topography meant that the mapping approach used in one state might not be suitable for another.
The postcode areas will also follow existing administrative boundaries and will not cross from one Local Government Area to another.
Officials said the new system could significantly improve Know-Your-Customer (KYC) processes by allowing financial institutions to verify customers’ physical locations more reliably, potentially linking verified addresses with National Identification Numbers (NIN).
The system is also expected to support emergency response, policing, social intervention programmes, e-commerce and logistics.
NIPOST plans to make the service available through digital platforms, mobile applications and USSD, potentially allowing people without smartphones or mobile data to access postcode services.
An AI-powered routing feature is also being developed to help logistics companies estimate delivery costs and timelines more accurately.
The project builds on earlier efforts to modernise Nigeria’s addressing system dating back to 2009.
NIPOST subsequently introduced initiatives including an Address Verification System and Digital Addressing System, while collaborations with the Nigerian Communications Commission and National Population Commission sought to improve address verification and mapping.
The current project draws on existing geospatial data from agencies including the Office of the Surveyor General, National Population Commission and National Space Research and Development Agency.
In particular, mapping carried out by the NPC between 2014 and 2022 for its Enumeration Area Demarcation exercise identified buildings, roads, footpaths and waterways across the country.
NIPOST is using the data as a foundation for the new system, reducing the need to map the entire country from scratch.
