Nigerian Army 63 Brigade honors Hon. Harrison Gwamnishu for gallantry
The 63 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, under the 6 Division headquartered in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has honored Hon. Harrison Gwamnishu, Director-General of Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation, with a gallantry award for his outstanding contributions to the fight against insurgency and kidnapping in Delta State.
The recognition, according to the Army, highlights Gwamnishu’s exceptional bravery, selflessness, and commitment to safeguarding lives and property in a region long troubled by militancy, piracy, and other criminal activities.
Speaking during the presentation, a senior officer of the 63 Brigade commended Gwamnishu’s collaborative efforts with security agencies, describing his role as “a model of courage and sacrifice that reinforces the Nigerian Army’s mission in the Niger Delta.”
Established in 2016, the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army is tasked with ensuring stability in the Niger Delta and protecting critical national assets. The 63 Brigade, operating under the division, has intensified operations against insurgents and kidnappers in Delta State. Officials noted that Gwamnishu’s recognition demonstrates the Army’s willingness to celebrate not only its personnel but also civilians and partners who share in the burden of national security.
In his response, Hon. Gwamnishu expressed gratitude for the award, dedicating it to communities affected by insecurity. “This recognition is not just for me, but for all those who continue to believe in a safer Delta and a better Nigeria. It strengthens my resolve to keep working, through Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation, to defend the rights of citizens and support peace-building efforts alongside the Nigerian Army and other security agencies,” he said.
Observers note that the award serves as both a tribute to Gwamnishu’s work and a reminder of the importance of synergy between security forces and civil society in confronting Nigeria’s security challenges.
