Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has vehemently denied claims surrounding his ouster, insisting that he remains the Speaker until due process is followed.

His comments come in response to the impeachment vote two weeks ago, which saw Mojisola Miranda elected as his successor.

Addressing Lagos residents on Saturday, Obasa dismissed the allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office that led to his impeachment. He emphasized that the procedures for his removal were not properly followed and that he remains in office pending legal compliance.

“I am not disturbed, perturbed, or worried about the purported removal. However, things must be done properly,” Obasa stated.

He likened the position of Speaker to that of a military general, saying, “If they say they don’t want me anymore, it is fine, but let them follow due procedure.”

Obasa was first elected Speaker in 2015, and his impeachment followed a series of accusations from the Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition, which alleged financial mismanagement during his tenure.

Among the claims, the group accused Obasa of misappropriating N17 billion for the construction of a gate at the Assembly complex, as well as spending N200 million on the House’s 22nd Thanksgiving service.

Obasa vehemently rejected these allegations, calling the claim of the N17 billion gate “ridiculous and untrue.” He further criticized the manner of his removal, alleging that a fake mace was used and questioning why the chamber was broken into during the process. “Why did they have to break the chamber and use a fake mace to carry out the removal?” he asked.

In addition to the allegations of financial misconduct, Obasa claimed that over 200 police officers, led by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, were deployed to invade the State Assembly and his private residence in Agege on the day of his impeachment.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has firmly rejected the allegations, with Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, the Assembly’s spokesperson, refuting the claims of financial mismanagement.

“The Lagos State House of Assembly does not have any such funds,” Ogundipe stated, emphasizing the Assembly’s commitment to integrity, transparency, and accountability. He further urged the anti-corruption group to conduct thorough investigations before making public accusations.

Obasa’s former Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele, also dismissed the allegations as baseless, reinforcing the Assembly’s stance against the charges.

Meanwhile, following her election as Speaker, Mojisola Miranda visited Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to present her vision for a “Greater Lagos,” emphasizing inclusive and collaborative legislation.

Despite Obasa’s claims, the political climate in the Assembly remains charged as the new leadership seeks to stabilize the legislature amid the controversy.
