Opposition lawmakers call for reconstitution of PDP leadership amid allegations of collusion with APC
The Coalition of Opposition Lawmakers in the House of Representatives has called for the reconstitution of the national leadership of the main opposition party
The Coalition of Opposition Lawmakers in the House of Representatives has called for the reconstitution of the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), alleging that some party leaders are working in collaboration with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The call was made in a statement issued by Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere (PDP-Imo) on Sunday in Abuja.
Ugochinyere, the spokesman for the coalition, accused certain national leaders of the PDP of secretly aligning with APC figures to undermine the party’s leadership structure.
He claimed there was a deliberate effort to block the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting that was scheduled to choose a new Chairman from the North Central region, where the position was originally designated to be filled.
“There are impostors within the PDP, and APC members will be laughing at the party now that they have successfully infiltrated and sabotaged it,” Ugochinyere alleged.
He criticized the continuous delay in holding the NEC meeting, noting that the reasons provided by the party’s acting leadership for postponing the meeting were no longer valid.
Ugochinyere expressed disappointment in the state of the PDP, describing it as “shameful” that the main opposition party had become so fragmented.
He noted that while Nigeria faces serious political and economic crises, the PDP, which should be a vibrant opposition force, is now seemingly “in bed” with the ruling APC.
He added that if the party’s founding fathers were alive, they would be “crying” over the current state of affairs.

“The reasons for not holding the NEC meeting have become untenable.
Till now, no NEC meeting. They keep giving different excuses,” Ugochinyere said.
The lawmaker emphasized that the acting leadership of the PDP had lost sight of the expectations of Nigerians for a strong and credible opposition.
However, he also commended the party’s loyal members who remained committed to its founding principles.
In a related development, the PDP Governors Forum has issued a three-month ultimatum for the NEC meeting to take place, adding pressure for the leadership reshuffle to occur.
