Panic as LAGFERRY boat bursts into flames in Ikorodu

A boat operated by the Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) burst into flames early Thursday morning at the Ipakodo terminal in Ikorodu, causing panic among passengers. The vessel, which was ferrying 19 passengers to Victoria Island, caught fire around 6:00 a.m.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in an official statement, confirmed that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated. However, four passengers sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

According to LASWA, its emergency response team promptly mobilized to the scene after receiving a distress call. The agency worked in collaboration with LAGFERRY, other boat operators, and first responders to contain the situation and prevent further damage.

“We are pleased to report that all passengers and crew on board were evacuated safely, though four passengers suffered minor injuries and are currently receiving medical attention,” LASWA said in its statement.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but LASWA assured the public that a full investigation is underway. The agency is working closely with LAGFERRY and other stakeholders to assess the situation and identify preventive measures.

“We are currently conducting thorough preliminary investigations into the cause of the incident, collaborating with LAGFERRY and other stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive assessment,” LASWA stated.

“Safety is our utmost priority, and we are committed to implementing any necessary recommendations to enhance fire prevention measures throughout the Lagos waterways.”

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred on Lagos waterways. In November 2023, a commercial boat caught fire at the Ikorodu loading point due to an electrical spark during ignition while the captain and deckhand were refueling the engine.

Thursday’s fire outbreak has raised fresh concerns over the safety of water transportation in Lagos, prompting calls for stricter safety regulations and enforcement of preventive measures.

LASWA has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the highest safety standards and preventing future occurrences, urging ferry operators to adhere strictly to safety protocols to protect passengers.
