Reactions trail irregular vote counting at ADC presidential primary in Yobe

The ongoing presidential primary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Potiskum, Yobe State, has generated widespread reactions after an unusual vote-counting sequence was observed during the collation exercise.

Delegates and observers were reportedly taken aback when votes were read out in a non-sequential pattern, with numbers announced as “1, 2, 3, 4, 20, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400…,” a development that sparked murmurs and reactions within the venue as collation progressed.

The irregular counting style quickly became a talking point among party members and political observers monitoring the exercise, with concerns raised about clarity and transparency in the collation process.

Despite the unusual sequence, official results eventually announced from the primary showed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerging with a commanding lead, polling 740 votes.

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, followed with 15 votes, while Hayatuddeen recorded 2 votes in the exercise.

The outcome highlighted a significant margin between the leading candidate and other contenders, even as attention remained fixed on the collation process itself due to the earlier confusion in vote announcement.

Party officials at the venue have yet to provide detailed clarification on the counting sequence that triggered reactions among delegates.

Observers said the incident briefly disrupted the atmosphere of the primary, although proceedings continued to conclude with the final declaration of results.

The ADC presidential primary is part of ongoing efforts by political parties to select their flag bearers ahead of the next general election cycle, with heightened attention on internal party processes and electoral transparency.
