SON intensifies efforts to standardize Made-in-Aba products for local and global acceptance
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) is ramping up efforts to standardize locally manufactured products, including Made-in-Aba brands, through its Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP), ensuring both local and international market competitiveness.
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has announced that it is intensifying its efforts to standardize locally manufactured products, including those from Aba, to boost their acceptance both locally and internationally.
This was revealed by SON’s Director of Region (South East), Aharanwa Chuks, in an interview with the press on Wednesday in Abuja.
Chuks explained that SON’s Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) is central to ensuring that all Nigerian-made products comply with the relevant Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS).
He highlighted that MANCAP involves direct engagement with manufacturers to verify that their products meet established quality benchmarks.
“This process includes inspecting production facilities, sampling products, and testing them against NIS requirements. Successful compliance results in the issuance of the MANCAP certification, signifying adherence to quality standards,” Chuks stated.
In Aba, a hub of local manufacturing, SON has been particularly proactive in educating manufacturers about the importance of standardization.

According to Chuks, SON has conducted several stakeholder interactions, gathering manufacturers from various sectors to provide guidance on producing goods that meet both local and international standards.
“For instance, leather manufacturers in Aba have been sensitized on standardization practices to enhance the global competitiveness of their products,” he noted.
“Manufacturers are encouraged to collaborate with SON to obtain MANCAP certification, ensuring their products are not only marketable within Nigeria but also competitive internationally.”
Chuks emphasized that the ultimate goal of this initiative is to boost consumer confidence and promote the acceptance of Made-in-Aba products globally.
