U.S. Embassy, Consulate in Nigeria suspend operations for Memorial Day observance

The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be temporarily closed on Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day, a solemn U.S. federal holiday dedicated to honoring American military personnel who lost their lives in service to the nation.

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria made the announcement via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, notifying the public of the suspension of all routine consular services for the day. Normal operations are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, May 27.

“Memorial Day is a time for remembrance of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. armed forces,” the statement read, urging citizens to reflect on the meaning of the occasion.

Observed annually on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day is marked across the United States with national ceremonies, cemetery visits, parades, and the display of the American flag at half-mast to honor fallen service members. It is also a time when Americans gather to pay respects to veterans and reflect on the cost of freedom.

While the embassy and consulate will be closed to the public on May 26, the U.S. Mission emphasized that individuals facing urgent consular emergencies can find assistance via emergency contact resources listed on its official website.

Nigerians with pending visa or passport appointments are advised to monitor embassy communications for any updates or rescheduling information.
