Ugwunwa’s best not good enough for shot put medal at Paralympics
Team Nigeria’s Flora Ugwunwa threw a season best 6.59 metres on Monday in the women’s seated shot put (F54) event of the athletics competition at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.
The result was however not good enough to take her to the event’s podium as she finished sixth in the eight-woman field of competitors at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.
The National Daily reports that Francisca Mardones of Chile threw 8.33m to win the gold medal and rewrite the world record.
She had set the now old world record with a mark of 8.19m in Dubai, UAE at the world championships in November 2019.
Gloria Zarza of Mexico won the silver medal with 8.06m for a personal best.
Nurkhon Kurbanova of Uzbekistan claimed the bronze medal with a throw of 7.77m for another personal best.
