US Speaker, Pelosi, defies China’s warning, flew in Taiwan in military aircraft
Speaker of the United States House, Nancy Pelosi, defied the warnings from China and flew into Taiwan in US military aircraft on Tuesday evening.
Pelosi is the highest profile elected US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years. China had on Tuesday morning cautioned that Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan may cause provocation, between US and China, insisting that Taiwan is a territory of China and not an independent country.
Speaker Polesi, 82, flew in a US military aircraft into Taiwan and was received at Taipei’s Songshan Airport by foreign minister Joseph Wu.
Pelosi in a Tweet after arrival, said: “Our delegation’s visit to Taiwan honours America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s vibrant Democracy.”
She insisted that her visit to Taiwan “in no way contradicts” US policy towards Taiwan and China.
The Speaker’s visit to Taiwan has increased diplomatic tension between the U.S. and China over Taiwan.
China’s foreign ministry had stated that “those who play with fire will perish by it.”
The People’s Liberation Army had disclosed that they were on “high alert” and would “launch a series of targeted military actions in response” to the visit of U.S. House Speaker to Taiwan.
