- Women, Youths protest detention of Opusuigi by Army
Several women and youth in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in Thursday stormed the streets of the state capital for the second time in one week to protest the continued detention of one Kenneth Opusuigi and others arrested by soldiers during the February 23 presidential elections in Rivers State.
Opusuigi who is the chairman of the Rivers State Petroleum Task Force was arrested in Abonema, Akuku-Iwu Local Government Area and has been kept in military custody at the six Division of the Nigeria Army, Port Harcourt.
The detainee’s wife, Uche, led Thursday’s protest by women.
A Port Harcourt High Court ordered Opusuigi’s release on Tuesday, an order the army authorities have refused to obey.
The Army partisan roles in the elections in Rivers State have been a critical issue of concerns across the country and in the international community. Information technology applied in close surveillance of the elections exposed several ills of the military partisan roles in the polls.
