Wike puts Nigerians on red alert over plot to rig 2023 elections
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Sunday put Niegrians on red alert, alleging plots to rig the 2023 general elections.
Governor Wike at an interdenominational Church Service on Sunday for Nigeria’s 61st Independence Anniversary at the Saint Paul’s Anglican Cathedral in Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, stated: “other countries are talking about how their elections will be transparent, we are talking about how we will plot to rig an election in 2023.”
The governor expressed perturbation over the resistance to the adoption of electronic transmission of election results in the country. He expressed that the adoption of electronic transmission of results would make the electoral system a little stronger, ensure transparency in the electoral process.
According to Governor Wike, “Transmit a result electronically to show transparency, to show that really the person you are declaring won the election is the problem.
“I thought by now, we should be talking about how this country will be competing with other developed nations.”
Wike further attributed poor leadership to the myriads of socio-economic crises in Nigeria, 61 years after independence.
The governor challenged Nigerians to take personal responsibility to ensure that the values that will entrench better society are strengthened as the country marks 61 years of independence amid the socio-cultural problems and ethno-religious intolerance. “it feels disappointing that Nigeria at 61 years is yet to have truly independent legislative and judicial arms that can check the excesses of the executive, especially in the management of finances,” Wike lamented.
