Insecurity: Sanwo-Olu, Obaseki, El-Rufai, advocate for State Police

Four governors, comprising of three All Progressives Congress (APC) governors and one Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governor, on Thursday advocated for state policing in Nigeria.

The governors who include Governor Babajide Sanw-Olu of Lagos State, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State; Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State; and Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, at the first edition of Ekiti State maiden investment Forum in Ado-Ekiti, expressed the need for the establishment of state police across the country to ease the containment of insecurity and crime wave in the country.

According to Sanwo-Olu: “One point that we should not drop an eye on is the issue of state police. “We’ve all talked about it. We should not let this opportunity slip by again.”

Fayemi added: “Governor Sanwo-Olu has spoken the minds of Governors collectively that we need multi-level policing arrangements.”

Governor Obaseki also stated, “we will not be able to run away from the fact that states will now have to play much more role in the entire value chain for security.”

Governor El-Rufai extended the advocacy to setting up police structures in local governments.

According to El-Rufai, “My colleagues have articulated it correctly.

“And the APC through federalism committee has made the case that we need multi-level policing, not just state police, even local government police.”

State police has been part of the wide advocacy for restructuring and devolution of powers.
