Bizarre over missing corpse of 33-year-old man from mortuary at University Teaching Hospital in Jos
There was a bizarre incident at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BUTH) Morgue in Jos, Plateau State when the corpse of 33-year-old man, David Adi, was missing on Wednesday. The corpse was lost in a case of negligence of duty but was later found after detailed investigations.
The remains of the deceased David from Nyakala Igbak, Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State, was deposited at the mortuary last Tuesday but could not be found when the family went to the teaching hospital for the corpse on Wednesday.
The family had arrived at the mortuary to take away the remains of David for interment but were shocked that the corpse had disappeared. This led to a thorough search for the dead body without result.
The deceased family were compelled to raise an alarm, causing pandemonium at the hospital premises, including going berserk to lock the main gates of the teaching hospital, and putting pressure on the management to bring out the missing corpse.
The pressure on the hospital management resulted in the checking of records which detected that the mortuary attendant had released the corpse to a different family on Monday, who had gone ahead to bury the deceased in Mista Ali comm unity, Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The hospital management, then, tracked the body to the community, and detected the location it was buried in Mista Ali. The family then exhumed the corpse, which was identified to be the corpse of David. It was then returned to the rightful family.
The Chief Medical Director of the Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), Professor Stephen Anzaku, was gathered to have noted that the confusion was caused by wrong labeling of corpses by the mortuary attendants.
