Nigeria’s quest for an early medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics suffered a significant setback on Tuesday with disappointing performances from Favour Ofili and Blessing Oborududu.

Ofili, who had qualified for the women’s 200m final in a historic feat, finished sixth with a time of 22.24 seconds.

The race was won by the USA’s Gabby Thomas in 21.83 seconds.

Meanwhile, in wrestling, Blessing Oborududu, the Tokyo 2020 silver medalist, was unable to secure a bronze medal in the women’s 68kg freestyle, losing 3-0 to Japan’s Nonoka Ozaki.

With these defeats, Nigeria’s hopes now rest on athletes like Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, who begins her campaign today.
