The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) is mobilizing citizens for a peaceful protest scheduled for October 1st, coinciding with Nigeria’s Independence Day.

The announcement was made by Hussaini Shuaibu, the council’s Director of Public Communications, in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday from Kaduna.

Shuaibu highlighted that sections 38-42 of the 1999 Constitution guarantee citizens’ rights to free association and expression.

He emphasized that these rights were established by Nigeria’s founding fathers to prevent those in power from isolating themselves from the populace.

“The NYCN is committed to holding the government accountable to its citizens,” Shuaibu stated, noting that recent protests from August 1-10, 2024, reflected widespread dissatisfaction with government policies.

Despite assurances from the government to address the protesters’ demands, Shuaibu expressed concern that many issues remain unresolved and have worsened over the past two months.

“In light of these ongoing hardships, we are mobilizing and sensitizing the public to join us in protesting peacefully until the government responds effectively to these pressing issues,” he added.

Shuaibu concluded by urging citizens to exercise their constitutional rights, asserting that it is the government’s responsibility to ensure citizen welfare and safety.

He called for a collective effort to prompt the government to act responsibly, aiming for a better Nigeria for all.
