Peter Obi condemns poor treatment of protesters, including minors, in Court

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has issued a strong condemnation of the treatment of protesters, including minors, who were brought to court under degrading conditions.

Obi highlighted the constitutional right to protest against bad governance that impacts citizens’ lives.

In a statement shared on his X account on Friday, he expressed outrage over a video showing 124 protesters—some visibly malnourished and weak—appearing in court to seek the enforcement of their fundamental rights.

The former governor of Anambra described the scenes as “disturbing and condemnable,” noting that some of the minors were so exhausted they could barely stand.

He emphasized that these children, who were in federal custody, were subjected to treatment that is alarming and unacceptable.

“The alleged offense of these individuals, including minors, is their protest against governance that directly affects their livelihoods—a right guaranteed by our constitution,” Obi stated.

He pointed out the irony that many current government officials once championed this right while in opposition.

Obi called for an investigation into the incident, urging the Minister of Justice, the Attorney General, and relevant authorities to address the inhumane treatment of minors and prevent future occurrences.

He praised the presiding judge for halting the trial, thereby sparing the country further embarrassment on the global stage.

He concluded by reiterating the need for a commitment to human dignity, noting that Nigeria must uphold these values as part of the global community.
