How Emir Sanusi survived Palace onslaught

The Kano Emirate in the past few weeks fell under the siege of state actors, threatening the autonomy and cultural potency of traditional institutions in Nigeria.

National Daily observed that Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, Emir of Kano, who has developed high reputation over the years for being vocal on public issues, essentially, government policies, after certain unfriendly remarks on the policies of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Government, fell under the hammer of Kano State Government culminating into the investigation of his administration of the Emir’s palace by the Kano State House of Assembly.

National Daily inquiry unveiled that the investigation by the State House of Assembly constituted a serious threat to the sustainability and tenure security of traditional rulers across the country. There are indications that political interference with traditional institutions or cultural leadership subvert the value system of that cleavage in the administration of the grassroots population.

Meanwhile, the intervention of eminent statesmen like Acting President Yemi Osinbajo; former Heads of State, Generals Ibrahim Babangida; Abdulsalami Abubakar; the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar; Alhaji Aliko Dangote; among others, were indicated to have halt the potential danger of the investigation by the Kano Assembly.

Thus, the State House of Assembly was said to have suspended the investigation of the Emir of Kano over an alleged misappropriation of N6 billion belonging to the Kano emirate under the Sanusi administration.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, was said to have acquainted other lawmakers on Monday that Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje had written to the House, seeking the suspension of the investigation.

Governor Ganduje was noted to have acknowledged that eminent Nigerians like Acting President Yemi Osinbajo; former military president, Ibrahim Babangida; ex-head of state, Abdulsalami Abubakar; Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar; billionaire businessman, Aliko Dangote; among others, pleaded on behalf of the Emir of Kano.

The Speaker was said to have disclosed that the governor’s letter revealed that a peace meeting was held in Kaduna, where the Emir “admitted all his mistakes and tendered an apology”.

This is corrective measure was gathered to follow similar actions of the state public complaint and anti-corruption commission which also suspended investigation of the Emir.
