Team Anambra heads to Gateway games with 150-strong contingent

Team Anambra is gearing up to compete at the 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed “Gateway Games,” scheduled to take place in Ogun State from May 16th to 30th, with a formidable 150-member contingent.
Emeka Obidimma, the Director of Sports for Anambra State, revealed to the press in Awka on Wednesday that the team comprises 100 athletes and 50 officials.
“Our target is to meet our previous record and surpass it. The spirit in camp is high, our athletes are ready to go for glory.”
Obidimma detailed that Anambra will participate in 20 different sporting events, including Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Chess, Darts, Deaf Table Tennis, Karate, Kickboxing, Wushu Kungfu, Para Athletics, Scrabble, Swimming, Taekwondo, Ncho, Volleyball, Weightlifting, and Wrestling.
He further stated that the team recently concluded an intensive five-day closed camping session in Awka as the final stage of their preparations before their scheduled departure on Friday.
The Director of Sports commended Patrick-Estate Onyedum, the Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Commission, for his administrative, technical, and logistical support in ensuring the team’s readiness.
Obidimma conveyed the state’s determined spirit, emphasizing that their aim is not merely participation but to actively compete and secure medals. “Our target is to meet our previous record and surpass it. The spirit in camp is high, our athletes are ready to go for glory,” he asserted.

He also expressed gratitude to the sports-loving Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, for his continuous support, and specifically thanked the Chairman of the state sports commission, Patrick-Estate Onyedum, for his leadership.
National Daily Newspaper recalls that Team Anambra achieved a total of 39 medals at the previous National Sports Festival held in Asaba, Delta State, comprising six gold, nine silver, and 24 bronze medals.
