Navy partners Lagos State in major environmental sanitation drive at Marine Bridge
In a coordinated effort to promote environmental sustainability and public hygiene, the Western Naval Command (WNC) of the Nigerian Navy on Saturday, May 25, conducted a large-scale sanitation exercise at Marine Bridge, Apapa, Lagos State, in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Environment.
The cleanup operation, which drew participation from several key environmental agencies, including the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), the Lagos State Waste Water Management Office (LAWMO), the Office of Environmental Services, and the Office of Drainage Services, was a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing urban cleanliness in one of Lagos’ busiest commercial corridors.
Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Environment, Engr. Kunle Rotimi Akodu, commended the Nigerian Navy for its active participation and praised the synergy demonstrated by all stakeholders. He noted that the joint initiative is a clear reflection of the state’s unwavering commitment to a cleaner, healthier, and more livable Lagos.
“This collaborative effort between the Nigerian Navy and our environmental agencies underscores the shared responsibility of maintaining public hygiene. It is a powerful demonstration of how government bodies and military institutions can work hand in hand for the benefit of the public,” Engr. Akodu said.
Rear Admiral M.G. Oamen, Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, described the sanitation campaign as part of the Nigerian Navy’s civil-military relations programme, in line with the strategic vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla.

He emphasized the Navy’s dedication to supporting the Lagos State Government’s urban cleanliness agenda.
“As a significant stakeholder in the Apapa area, the Navy understands the importance of environmental sanitation. A clean city promotes public health and facilitates economic activity, particularly in key commercial hubs like Apapa,” Rear Admiral Oamen remarked.
Throughout the exercise, participants engaged in clearing blocked drainage channels, removing heaps of waste, and sensitizing local residents and traders on the importance of proper waste disposal.
The initiative not only improved the sanitary condition of the area but also fostered stronger ties between the Nigerian Navy and the civilian population.
The success of the Marine Bridge sanitation drive highlights the increasing value of multi-agency collaboration in tackling environmental challenges and sets a positive precedent for future joint initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for Lagosians.
