Akon claims many artists are famous but financially struggling
Senegalese-American singer has sparked debate after claiming that many musicians enjoy fame without necessarily enjoying the financial rewards generated by the music industry.
Speaking during an interview with Hip Hop Eye, the artist argued that performers are often the last people to receive payments from music-related revenue streams despite being the public face of the industry.

According to him, professionals working behind the scenes frequently earn more consistent income than artists themselves. “In the music industry, the artist is the last to get paid. He is the broke one but he is the most famous,” he said.
The singer advised aspiring entertainment professionals to explore other areas of the business if their primary goal is financial success.
“If you want to be broke and famous, be the artist. But if you want to make real money, go to other sectors of the music business,” he stated.
pointed to roles such as producers, songwriters, managers, agents, and entertainment lawyers as areas where individuals can build substantial careers and earnings.
“There are so many areas in the entertainment field that you can really maximise,” he added.
While Akon’s comments have generated mixed reactions, industry observers often note that artists’ earnings can vary significantly depending on factors such as ownership of masters, publishing rights, touring revenue, endorsement deals, and the terms of their recording contracts. Successful artists who control more of their intellectual property can earn substantially more than those signed to restrictive deals.
