Qatar Stun Switzerland with Dramatic Late Equaliser
Qatar Stun Switzerland with Dramatic Late Equaliser at FIFA World Cup 2026.
Qatar produced one of the early shocks of the FIFA World Cup 2026 as veteran defender Boualem Khoukhi struck deep into stoppage time to secure a dramatic 1-1 draw against Switzerland in a thrilling Group B encounter.
Switzerland appeared destined to begin their campaign with all three points after Breel Embolo converted a first-half penalty, but Qatar’s resilience paid off in spectacular fashion when Khoukhi headed home a last-gasp equaliser to send their supporters into celebration.
The Swiss were awarded a penalty in the 13th minute after Remo Freuler met a downward header from Embolo and was brought down by goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada inside the area. Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot, and Embolo calmly dispatched the resulting penalty to give Switzerland the lead.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities throughout the match, Switzerland failed to extend their advantage. Qatar, meanwhile, remained disciplined and determined, with goalkeeper Abunada making several key saves to keep his side within touching distance.

Their persistence was rewarded in the dying moments of the contest. As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Homam Ahmed delivered a dangerous ball into the box, where captain Boualem Khoukhi rose highest to power home a header and spark wild celebrations among the Qatari players and fans.
The result earned Qatar a valuable point in Group B and marked a historic milestone for the Gulf nation, securing their first point at a FIFA World Cup finals tournament. For Switzerland, it was a frustrating outcome after controlling large periods of the match and creating enough chances to put the game beyond reach.
