Two killed as truck, bus burst into flames in Ogun Expressway crash

Two people lost their lives in a fatal road crash involving a truck and a commercial bus along the Ijebu Ode–Benin Expressway in Ogun State in the early hours of Thursday.

The crash occurred at about 5:10 a.m. near the Ogbere/Ogere Junction and involved a white Mack truck with registration number ABC 660 XC and an orange Peugeot J5 bus.

The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Public Education Officer, Superintendent Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi.

According to the FRSC, four adult males were involved in the crash. Two of the occupants died at the scene, while the other two escaped unhurt.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC attributed the accident to route violation and excessive speeding.

The impact of the collision caused the Peugeot J5 bus to burst into flames, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged before emergency responders arrived to contain the fire.

FRSC rescue personnel reportedly arrived at the scene within minutes of receiving the distress call and immediately diverted traffic to an alternative lane to prevent further accidents and reduce congestion along the busy highway.

The bodies of the deceased were evacuated by officers of the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD), Ogbere Division, and deposited at a nearby mortuary.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged motorists to obey traffic regulations.

He warned that dangerous driving practices such as route violation and speeding remain among the leading causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways, especially during periods of poor visibility and wet road conditions.

The FRSC reiterated its appeal to road users to exercise caution, maintain safe speeds, and adhere strictly to traffic rules to prevent avoidable tragedies.
