Leeds beat Tottenham 1-0 to end five-game winless run
Leeds United ended their five-match winless run in the English Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road on Saturday.
Substitute Noah Okafor scored the decisive goal in the 79th minute to secure all three points for Daniel Farke’s side and end Tottenham’s three-match winning streak.
The encounter remained goalless at half-time, with both teams struggling to convert their opportunities despite creating several attacking threats.
Leeds increased the pressure after the restart, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ao Tanaka coming close to breaking the deadlock.
Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky also produced an impressive save to deny Sean Longstaff, keeping the visitors in the contest.
However, Leeds eventually found the breakthrough when Okafor, who had come on just moments earlier, finished from close range after combining with fellow substitute Harry Wilson.
The Swiss forward needed just 97 seconds after entering the game to score the winning goal, giving the home supporters plenty to celebrate.
Tottenham attempted to find an equaliser in the closing stages, but Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford made an important save to deny Jan Paul van Hecke’s header from a late set-piece.
The match also featured a controversial first-half incident involving Leeds defender Jayden Bogle and Tottenham forward Mathys Tel.
Bogle caught Tel around the Achilles area during a challenge in the 34th minute. Following a lengthy VAR review, the defender avoided a red card, while Tel was forced off injured before half-time.
The result ended Tottenham’s run of three consecutive Premier League victories under manager Roberto De Zerbi and provided a significant boost for Leeds ahead of the international break.
Leeds moved above Tottenham into eighth place in the league standings with 14 points, while Spurs dropped to 10th with 12 points.
The victory was Leeds’ first league win since their 4-1 triumph over Newcastle United in September, ending a difficult spell that had seen them struggle to maintain their early-season momentum.
Both teams will now turn their attention to their next fixtures after the international break as the Premier League campaign continues.
