Abacha’s former chief security officer, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (rtd), set to run for the presidency
Former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (rtd), has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Al-Mustapha made the announcement during a strategic meeting with the SDP’s state executive and his supporters in Minna, Niger State, on Tuesday. Addressing the gathering, he expressed concern over the current state of the nation and vowed to serve with integrity and a clear vision for national revival.
“I am pained and deeply concerned about the current state of the nation. However, with the right direction and commitment, Nigeria can rise again,” he said, adding that the journey ahead may be tough but achievable with collective effort.
According to a statement by his campaign’s Director of News Media and ICT, Jubril Umar Sanda, the meeting is part of a broader engagement strategy across the country as Al-Mustapha prepares for the 2027 race.
The statement affirmed his readiness to lead with “integrity, courage, and a clear plan for progress.” During his visit to Minna, Al-Mustapha also stopped in Mokwa to sympathize with victims of a recent flood that displaced over 200 people and caused massive property loss.
He stressed the urgency of strong leadership, unity, and sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s challenges. SDP State Chairman, Alhaji Buhari Yakubu Yarima, welcomed Al-Mustapha’s declaration and commended his dedication to public service.
He expressed optimism about the party’s growing strength and chances in 2027. Al-Mustapha’s entry into the race adds to the growing list of presidential hopefuls as Nigerians look toward the future with heightened expectations for competent leadership.
