APC Presidential primary sparks rigging concerns after viral vote-count video raises questions (Video)
The recently concluded All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary has come under intense public scrutiny following allegations of irregular vote counting, raising fears among critics about possible manipulation of the process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party announced that its presidential candidate secured a total of 10.9 million votes in the internal election held to determine its flagbearer. The result was widely circulated by party officials shortly after the exercise was concluded.
However, controversy erupted after videos surfaced on social media showing electoral officers allegedly recording or announcing vote figures in a manner that viewers described as inconsistent and suspicious. In the clips, figures were seen or heard jumping abruptly from lower numbers such as 70 to significantly higher figures including 500 and over 1,000 during what appeared to be tallying procedures.
The footage has triggered widespread debate online, with opposition voices and civic observers questioning the transparency of the process and warning that such incidents, if accurate, could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral integrity.
Some commentators have expressed concern that the incident reflects a broader pattern of weak electoral accountability within political party structures, arguing that irregularities at the primary level could signal potential risks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Supporters of the APC, however, have dismissed the allegations, insisting that the primary election followed established party guidelines and was conducted in line with internal democratic procedures. They maintain that the final result reflects legitimate delegate votes from across the country.
As of press time, the APC has not issued a detailed response specifically addressing the viral video or the concerns raised about the vote-counting process. Independent verification of the footage has not yet been confirmed.
Election observers and analysts say the controversy underscores growing public sensitivity around electoral transparency in Nigeria, particularly in relation to how political parties conduct their primaries, which often serve as a preview of general election credibility.
While no formal petition has been announced, calls are increasing for the party and relevant electoral stakeholders to clarify the process and reassure the public about the integrity of the outcome.
