Arsenal thrashed Manchester City 5-1 on Sunday, keeping their Premier League title ambitions alive, while Manchester United suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

In a crucial clash between the two sides that have finished in the top four in the past two seasons, Arsenal triumphed to move within six points of leaders Liverpool, who still have a game in hand.

The Gunners were handed a dream start as City’s Manuel Akanji lost possession just two minutes in, allowing Kai Havertz to set up Martin Ødegaard, who opened the scoring. However, Havertz later squandered a golden opportunity to double the lead, which could have proven costly.

City equalized early in the second half when Erling Haaland headed in his 250th career club goal, bringing the game level. But Arsenal quickly regained the lead just 105 seconds later when Thomas Partey’s shot deflected off John Stones and into the net.

The Gunners took full control, with 18-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly making the most of his reprieve after a controversial red card last weekend, curling in his first goal for the club. Havertz added another, firing a low shot into the far corner after City’s defense was ripped apart by Arsenal’s counter-attack.

In stoppage time, another teenager, Ethan Nwaneri, rounded off the rout with a fine curling goal.

The defeat leaves Manchester City still in fourth, but now 15 points adrift of the top, ending their hopes of a fifth consecutive title.

Meanwhile, Manchester United endured another frustrating loss at home, this time to Crystal Palace, who triumphed 2-0.

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored both goals for Palace in the second half, condemning United to a fifth defeat in their last six home league games.

United had shown promise earlier in the season, but their attack faltered in this match, with Kobbie Mainoo’s early effort hitting the post.

Palace took the lead when Maxence Lacroix’s header, following an Eberechi Eze free-kick, hit the bar and fell to Mateta, who fired home.

United’s misery was compounded when Lisandro Martínez was stretchered off with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.

Elsewhere, Tottenham eased their relegation fears with a 2-0 win over Brentford.

The Bees were unlucky, missing several chances, including a header from Yoane Wissa that hit the bar.

Brentford gifted Spurs the opening goal when Vitaly Janelt inadvertently headed a Son Heung-min corner into his own net in the 29th minute.

Brentford’s hopes of a comeback were dashed when Tottenham sealed the victory on the counter-attack, with Pape Sarr scoring from a pass by Son.

The win lifted Spurs to 14th, 10 points clear of the relegation zone, easing the pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou.
