Aston Villa has secured the loan signing of Marcus Rashford from Manchester United for the remainder of the season, bringing an end to the England international’s difficult spell under manager Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.

Once a fan favorite at United, Rashford has not played for his boyhood club since December 12, and earlier this season admitted that he was ready for a “new challenge.”

The 27-year-old had been linked with moves to AC Milan and Barcelona, but both clubs were reportedly put off by his £300,000-a-week wages.

Sky Sports reports that Villa will cover at least 75% of Rashford’s salary during the loan period, with the figure potentially rising to 90% based on performance-related bonuses.

The deal also includes an option for Villa to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season for £40 million.

Rashford expressed his excitement about the move in a statement, saying, I was lucky to have a few clubs approach me, but Aston Villa was an easy decision. I really admire the way Aston Villa have been playing this season, and the manager’s ambitions.” He added, “I just want to play football and am excited to get started. I wish everyone at Manchester United all the best for the rest of the season.”

The move comes after Villa sold Colombia striker Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr for a reported £64 million.

Unai Emery’s Villa side, who are currently eighth in the Premier League, are also in the last 16 of the Champions League and remain hopeful of qualifying for next season’s tournament.

Rashford, who has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for Manchester United, won multiple major trophies with the club, including the Europa League, two FA Cups, and two League Cups.

However, his recent performances have been questioned by Ruben Amorim, who took charge at United in November.

The Portuguese coach publicly criticized Rashford’s attitude and work ethic in training, even suggesting that he would rather have club goalkeeper Jorge Vital in the squad over Rashford.

“Our team should be so much better with Rashford, but he has to change,” Amorim said after United’s 1-0 win against Fulham.

“If he does change, we are more than welcome to put a talent like Rashford in, and we need it.”

This loan move to Villa provides Rashford with an opportunity to rehabilitate his reputation and regain his form after a difficult period.

Despite a career-best 30 goals in the 2022/23 season, Rashford has struggled this campaign, scoring just seven goals in 24 appearances.
