Biafra League claims takeover of Bakassi, bans oil firms from paying taxes to Nigerian, Cameroonian govts
An agitation group for the Biafra Republic, the Biafra Nations League (BNL), has claimed the takeover of the Bakassi Peninsula and moves to take control of the oil resources in the Delta province. The unequivocally proclaimed the Bakassi Peninsula its operational headquarters.
The BNL, accordingly, banned oil firms in the Peninsula from paying taxes to the governments of Nigeria and Cameroon. The Biafra Nations League, therefore, issued 20 days ultimatum to all oil firms in Bakassi Peninsula, to desist from paying taxes to Nigerian and Cameroon governments.
The group cautioned that undermining their directive, the BNL Militia loyalists will carry out operations to sack the companies from the Peninsula. BNL loyalists had a fortnight ago, pulled down the national flag of Cameroon from the Bakassi Peninsula.
The BNL Deputy National Leader and Head of Operations of BBs Media, Ebuta Takon, at a media briefing in Calabar, Cross River State, affirmed that the “BNL is technically in control of Bakassi because natives of the region are Nigerians of Biafra extraction.” Ebuta Takon maintained that the BNL had declared its organization a representative of the de facto government of Biafra.
He maintained that the companies will not be allowed to keep remitting taxes to the government of Nigeria who benefits 60% of the oil revenue, and the French government of Cameroon who benefits 40%.
Takon declared that BNL members have been mandated to ensure compliance. He insisted that Biafra is entitled to the highest percentage of the oil revenue even before becoming a sovereign state.
Ebuta Takon threatened that BNL will halt oil exploration in the region and ensure that the League will forcefully evict all oil firms that defies or ignores the directive of the group.
