Biden orders restoration of civilian govt in Sudan

President Joe Biden of the United States (US) on Thursday ordered the military junta in Sudan to immediately restore the civilian government in the country.

The European Union (EU), the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) had earlier demanded an end to violence against peaceful demonstrators in Sudan and the release of detainees.

Biden in a statement declared:  “Our message to Sudan’s military authorities is overwhelming and clear: the Sudanese people must be allowed to protest peacefully and the civilian-led transitional government must be restored.”

Biden decried that the recent events in Sudan reflect “a grave setback” for the country; c condemning the military coup.
