Bosnia lead race for round of 32 spot as third-place rankings take shape at 2026 World Cup
The battle for qualification to the knockout stage of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup is intensifying, with Bosnia and Herzegovina currently leading the standings among third-placed teams after the latest round of group-stage matches.
Bosnia boosted their chances of reaching the Round of 32 with a convincing 3-1 victory over Qatar, a result that lifted them to the top of the third-place rankings despite finishing behind Switzerland and co-hosts Canada in Group B.
The Bosnians have accumulated four points from their three group matches, having recorded one win, one draw and one defeat. Although they possess a goal difference of minus one, their points tally currently places them ahead of other teams competing for the limited third-place qualification spots.
The 2026 World Cup, the first edition to feature an expanded 48-team format, allows the top two teams from each of the 12 groups to advance automatically to the Round of 32. They are joined by the eight best third-placed teams, creating an additional pathway to the knockout rounds for countries that narrowly miss out on automatic qualification.
As the group stage enters its decisive phase, several nations remain in contention for those coveted third-place spots.
Sweden currently occupy second place in the third-place table, followed by Croatia, South Korea, Algeria, Paraguay, Scotland and Cape Verde, who complete the top eight positions as things stand.

The rankings remain highly fluid, with several teams still scheduled to play their final group matches over the coming days.
At the other end of the standings, Belgium, DR Congo, Ecuador and Senegal currently find themselves outside the qualification places and facing an uphill task to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
The race is expected to become even tighter as more matches are played. Ecuador, Sweden and Paraguay are all in action on Thursday, with their performances likely to have a significant impact on the third-place rankings.
Attention will then shift to Friday’s fixtures involving Belgium, Cape Verde and Senegal, three teams eager to improve their standing and boost their chances of progression.
The final round of matches affecting the third-place table will take place on Saturday when DR Congo, Croatia and Algeria conclude their group-stage campaigns.
With qualification scenarios changing after every result, teams are not only battling for victories but also striving to improve their goal difference and overall records, factors that could ultimately determine who advances to the knockout stage.
As the expanded tournament format continues to create new opportunities and dramatic qualification battles, fans around the world will be closely monitoring the third-place standings ahead of the final group matches that will decide the remaining places in the Round of 32.
