Breaking: Shoprite on fire; police kills protester
Two ShopRite malls located at Jakande and Sangotedo were this evening attacked in Lekki by some Nigerians following the Xenophobic attack on Nigerians in South Africa earlier in the week.
Shoprite is a South African-owned shopping mall; one of the largest in Nigeria at the moment.
Since the attacks on Nigerians in South Africa went viral, Nigerians at home have expressed anger on the social media noting that South Africa government and citizens are taken Nigerians for granted.
The Shoprite at Jakande was attacked about 2pm, a situation that culminated in the killing of one person by the police shooting sporadically at the miscreants who fought the police back to set the mall ablaze
Expired tyres were burnt at the entrance leading to the mall.
Just as tension was gradually calming down, the mall located at Sangotedo was attacked by 8pm; part of it set ablaze and goods carted away.
Attempts to stop further attack by the police and soldiers under Operation MESA, the National Daily gathered, were thwarted as they overpowered the Security men and set the mall on fire.
A witness identified as Lukman who spoke with this correspondent said “there is chaos at the ShopRite. Part of it has been set on fire and they drove away the policemen and soldiers that attempted to stop them. It is a crazy state here,” he explained.
