Brighton 4-0 Aston Villa: De Cuyper and Hinshelwood inspire Seagulls to stunning win
Brighton & Hove Albion made an emphatic start to their new Premier League campaign with a 4-0 demolition of Europa League winners Aston Villa at the Amex Stadium.
The Seagulls effectively settled the contest inside the opening 31 minutes, with Maxim De Cuyper scoring once and contributing to another, while Jack Hinshelwood struck twice in the space of a minute.
Villa’s nightmare was compounded shortly before half-time when new signing João Gomes was sent off following a VAR review for kicking out at Georginio Rutter.
The result gives Fabian Hurzeler’s side an ideal start to the season, while Unai Emery faces an early examination of his reshaped Villa squad.
Brighton strike early
Villa started brightly, with Emiliano Buendia going close inside the opening five minutes after winning possession high up the pitch.
However, Brighton took the lead in the eighth minute.
Pau Torres attempted to play out from the back but his pass presented an opportunity to De Cuyper. The Belgian’s effort struck the post before deflecting into the net off Victor Lindelöf.
Brighton’s pressure continued and they doubled their advantage 10 minutes later.
Rutter made an excellent run behind the Villa defence before cutting the ball back, allowing De Cuyper to finish from close range.
The Belgian’s second goal turned a promising start into a nightmare for Villa, who were struggling to contain Brighton’s movement in attack.
Hinshelwood scores twice in a minute
Brighton added a third in the 30th minute.
De Cuyper delivered from the left and Diego Gómez knocked the ball back across goal, allowing Hinshelwood to arrive and tap home.
Barely a minute later, Brighton struck again.
Yasin Ayari won possession from João Gomes inside the Villa penalty area, and Hinshelwood reacted quickest to score his second and put Brighton 4-0 ahead after just 31 minutes.
Villa’s first half then went from disastrous to disastrous.
Gomes, already booked, kicked out at Rutter after a challenge. Following a VAR review, the Brazilian was shown a straight red card in the 40th minute.
The £38m signing’s debut could hardly have gone worse: Villa were four goals down and reduced to 10 men before half-time.
Villa unable to recover
Brighton continued to control the match after the break, although they did not add to their tally.
With a four-goal advantage and an extra man, Hurzeler’s side were able to manage the game comfortably, while Villa concentrated on preventing further damage.
The visitors eventually saw out the remainder of the match without conceding again, but the damage had already been done.
Brighton finished as convincing winners, while Villa were left to reflect on one of their worst opening-day performances in recent memory.
Villa analysis: Emery faces major rebuilding challenge
The defeat highlighted the scale of the challenge facing Emery after a summer of major changes at Villa Park.
Villa have lost several important members of the team that enjoyed a highly successful previous campaign, including Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa and Lucas Digne.
There is also uncertainty surrounding Ollie Watkins, who was left out of the squad amid reports linking him with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez’s future is also uncertain following the collapse of a proposed move to Juventus, while Villa have signed Japan international Zion Suzuki as competition in goal.
Emery therefore has the difficult task of rebuilding a squad while attempting to maintain the standards that saw Villa secure European football and win the Europa League.
The opening-day performance suggested that the transition could be difficult.
João Gomes endured a particularly miserable debut. The midfielder lost possession in the build-up to Brighton’s fourth goal before being dismissed shortly afterwards.
Villa’s defensive problems were also exposed repeatedly as Brighton exploited spaces and punished mistakes.
Brighton analysis: Dream start for Hurzeler
For Brighton, the afternoon could hardly have gone better.
Hurzeler’s team were aggressive, organised and ruthless in the first half, taking advantage of Villa’s defensive errors while producing some excellent attacking combinations.
De Cuyper was one of the outstanding performers, scoring twice and playing a role in Brighton’s third goal.
Hinshelwood was equally impressive, scoring twice in quick succession to effectively end the contest before half-time.
Summer signing Luka Vušković also made his Premier League debut at centre-back and produced a composed display.
Rutter, meanwhile, operated as Brighton’s central attacking option despite the club being without a recognised striker. Although he did not score, his movement and assist for De Cuyper’s second goal made him an important part of Brighton’s first-half performance.
The result provides Hurzeler with a huge confidence boost at the beginning of the campaign.
