Buhari reveals financial challenges after leaving office
Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that he is currently experiencing financial difficulties following his eight-year tenure as the nation’s leader.
Speaking to the BBC Hausa Service on Monday, Buhari revealed that he sustains himself financially through rental income from one of his houses in Kaduna.
Buhari emphasized his commitment to integrity while in office, asserting that he did not corruptly enrich himself.
“After my eight years as a civil president, I have only three houses: one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I’ve rented out one of them to sustain myself and cover my feeding expenses,” he said.
The former president maintained that his modest lifestyle and lack of financial impropriety demonstrate his dedication to transparency during his administration.
“Nobody can accuse me of illicit enrichment. I have nothing to hide,” Buhari added.
Reflecting on his time in office, Buhari described Nigeria as a particularly challenging nation to govern due to its complexity. He noted that many Nigerians underestimate the difficulties leaders face.

“Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, but most Nigerians are unaware. You will not understand the complexities of leadership and the country itself until you find yourself in the administrative position of the country,” he explained.
The former president urged current and future leaders to prioritize transparency and accountability in governance to address the country’s numerous challenges.
Buhari also spoke about his health, noting that he looks and feels better since stepping down as president.
“I look much better and healthier now than when I was the president of the country. Anybody that sees me now acknowledges that I look better than before,” he remarked.
Buhari’s revelation has sparked discussions among Nigerians about the financial state of former leaders and the need for accountability in public office. Many have commended him for his openness and for setting an example of modest living after leaving office.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic and governance challenges, Buhari’s statements serve as a reminder of the importance of integrity and the realities of leadership in Africa’s most populous nation.
