Community arrests Imam over alleged support for extremists in Niger Republic
Residents of the Soubdou area in Niger Republic have reportedly apprehended an Islamic cleric accused of preaching in support of jihadist insurgents before handing him over to the country’s security forces.
According to accounts circulating on social media, members of the community arrested the imam after alleging that he had been delivering sermons sympathetic to militants affiliated with the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an extremist group linked to al-Qaeda that operates across parts of the Sahel region.
Eyewitness accounts shared online claimed the residents restrained the cleric before transferring him to Nigerien security personnel for further investigation. However, authorities in Niger had not issued an official statement on the incident at the time of filing this report, and the allegations against the cleric have not been independently verified.
The incident has reignited debate on the role of communities in identifying and reporting individuals suspected of promoting violent extremism.
Reacting to the development, social media users drew comparisons with Nigeria’s security challenges, arguing that authorities should intensify efforts to identify and prosecute individuals who use religious platforms to promote extremist ideologies.

Some commentators alleged that radical preaching often goes unreported in parts of Nigeria, warning that such rhetoric could contribute to violent extremism if left unchecked. They called on security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and community engagement to prevent the spread of extremist narratives.
Security experts have long maintained that countering terrorism requires more than military operations. They argue that disrupting extremist recruitment and ideology through community vigilance, religious dialogue, intelligence sharing and deradicalisation programmes is essential to addressing the root causes of insurgency.
Nigeria has battled insurgent groups, including Boko Haram and its splinter factions, for more than a decade, with authorities repeatedly urging citizens to provide timely information on suspicious activities to security agencies.
While the reported arrest in Niger Republic has attracted widespread attention online, officials are yet to publicly confirm the circumstances surrounding the incident or announce any charges against the cleric. Investigations are expected to determine whether the allegations are supported by evidence.
