Dangote Refinery surpasses capacity, targets 1.4m barrels daily in global expansion drive
Nigeria’s flagship petroleum processing facility, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, has achieved a major operational milestone after successfully increasing its crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), exceeding its original nameplate capacity of 650,000 bpd.
The feat was recorded during a performance test conducted by the refinery’s process licensors, underscoring the facility’s growing operational efficiency and reinforcing its status as the world’s largest single-train petroleum refinery.
The development marks a significant step in the refinery’s expansion journey and signals its readiness to play an even larger role in Nigeria’s energy security, regional fuel supply and global petroleum products market.
The successful increase in throughput demonstrates the refinery’s ability to process additional crude volumes while maintaining efficiency across its production units.
Officials said the achievement reflects the strength of the refinery’s engineering design and operational systems, enabling it to surpass its initial design specifications less than two years after commencing fuel production.
Vice-President, Oil and Gas, Dangote Industries Limited, Mr. Devakumar Edwin, described the development as part of a broader strategy aimed at transforming the facility into one of the largest refining complexes in the world.
According to Edwin, plans are already underway to more than double the refinery’s current processing capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day within the next 30 months.
“The expansion programme is designed not only to meet domestic demand but also to establish the refinery as a dominant global refining hub,” he said.

The proposed expansion would elevate the refinery beyond its current record as the world’s largest single-train refinery and position it among the largest refining facilities globally.
Industry observers note that such an increase in capacity could fundamentally reshape fuel trade patterns across Africa and strengthen Nigeria’s position as a major exporter of refined petroleum products.
The refinery, owned by Nigerian billionaire industrialist and philanthropist Aliko Dangote, commenced commercial fuel production in 2024 and has steadily ramped up output of petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum products.
Since beginning operations, the facility has rapidly emerged as a key supplier to domestic and international markets, exporting refined products to several African countries and major European destinations, including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands.
The refinery has also supplied gasoline to the United States market and aviation fuel to Saudi Arabia, highlighting its growing influence in global energy trade.
In another indication of its expanding global footprint, the refinery emerged as the world’s largest exporter of jet fuel in April, according to market intelligence reports from S&P Global Commodities.
The achievement underscores the facility’s growing competitiveness in international aviation fuel markets and reflects rising demand for its products among global buyers.
As production volumes continue to increase, the refinery has attracted growing interest from international crude oil suppliers and commodity trading companies seeking to participate in its feedstock supply chain.
With output now exceeding its original design capacity and further expansion plans already underway, the Dangote Refinery appears poised to play an increasingly strategic role in shaping the future of Nigeria’s energy sector and the global petroleum products market.
