Edo Jailbreak: Prison security, police, army put down insurrectionists
Inmates of the Edo correctional centre organized an attempt from within to break out of the prison Thursday, but the operatives of the facility and police and Nigerian Army on Thursday foiled the attempt.
Some of the awaiting trial inmates, especially those recaptured, had resorted to protest in an attempt to escape but they were stopped by security agents.
The public relation officer correctional service in the state, Aminu Suleman, confirmed the incident in a statement.
“The attempted jailbreak, which started at 12:30pm, was initiated by a confrontation between some awaiting trial inmates, especially the recaptured escapees, and convicted inmates,” he said.
According to him, the development led to a confrontation between them and the convicted inmates.
He said a reinforcement was immediately mobilised from the state headquarters to enforce law and order.
The situation has been brought under control, adding that investigation into the incident has been instituted to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the disturbance.
The Abolongo facility witnessed such revolt few days ago, with attackers coming with IEDs and guns, and successfully broke out over 800 inmates.
The Edo facility witnessed its most recent jailbreak last October during the ENDSARS protest.
