The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to overturning the results of the September 21, 2024, governorship election, which saw the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, declared as the winner.
This declaration was made as the State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal resumed its proceedings Today, Monday January 13.
In a communiqué released following a high-level meeting of the PDP leadership, including its governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, the party underscored its determination to reclaim what it described as a stolen mandate.
The meeting, convened by the Chairman of the Edo State PDP Caretaker Committee, Tony Aziegbemi, took place on Sunday, with the communiqué signed by the Secretary of the Caretaker Committee, Henry Tenebe.
The communiqué outlined several resolutions aimed at maintaining momentum in the party’s legal battle and rallying support:
Commitment to Legal Action: The party expressed confidence in the judiciary as it seeks to reclaim the governorship mandate it insists was duly given by the people of Edo State. It urged members and supporters to remain steadfast in their prayers and support for the cause.

Critique of APC Leadership: The PDP expressed grave concerns over what it described as the APC-led administration’s mismanagement, stating that the state has experienced significant setbacks since the election.
Appeal to Party Members: The party lauded the loyalty and dedication of its supporters and urged them to remain resolute in their backing for the party’s leadership and vision for Edo State.
Legal and political analysts have weighed in on the unfolding events, highlighting the challenges and implications of the PDP’s move:
Legal Perspective: Constitutional lawyer Dr. Samuel Okon noted that election tribunals are typically rigorous and require substantial evidence to overturn declared results. “For the PDP to succeed, they must provide incontrovertible evidence of irregularities, such as voter suppression or manipulation of results,” he said.
Political Ramifications: Political analyst Bola Ajibade emphasized the importance of public perception in cases like this. “This tribunal case will not only test the strength of the PDP’s claims but also influence public trust in electoral processes. The party’s ability to maintain a united front is crucial.”
Public reaction to the PDP’s legal challenge remains divided. While party loyalists have expressed optimism, many citizens are cautious, emphasizing the need for stability and development in Edo State regardless of the tribunal’s outcome.
Civil society organizations have also called for transparency in the tribunal proceedings to ensure justice is served. A spokesperson for the Edo Coalition for Democracy urged both parties to respect the rule of law and avoid actions that could destabilize the state.
