Edo security squad arrests 12 suspected cultists, dismantles alleged criminal hideout in Benin
Operatives of the Edo State Special Security Squad (ESSS) have arrested 12 suspected cultists during a raid on a location identified as a major hub for cult-related activities and illicit drug trafficking in Benin City.
The operation, carried out in the Asoro Hill area of Uzebu Quarters along Ekenwan Road, forms part of the Edo State Government’s intensified crackdown on cultism, drug abuse and other violent crimes across the state.
Speaking after the operation, the Publicity Secretary of the ESSS, Mr. George Aburime, said intelligence reports had identified Asoro Hill and its surrounding areas in Oredo Local Government Area as a hideout for suspected cult groups and drug traffickers.
“The suspects were arrested at Asoro Hill, Uzebu Quarters, along Ekenwan Road, which has been identified as a hub for drug trafficking and cult activities,” Aburime said.
He explained that the raid was conducted following sustained surveillance and intelligence gathering by security operatives aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating within the area.
According to the ESSS spokesperson, all 12 suspects have been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for profiling, investigation and possible prosecution.
Authorities said the suspects would face charges in court if found culpable after investigations are concluded.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts by the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo to combat cultism, illegal drug activities and violent crimes in Edo State.
Aburime reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward criminality, warning that individuals or groups aiding cult activities, harbouring criminals or facilitating the circulation of illegal arms would be treated as accomplices and prosecuted under the law.
He added that security agencies remain on high alert and would continue intelligence-driven operations to identify and dismantle criminal hideouts across the state.
Residents of Benin City have also been urged to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist in preventing crimes and maintaining public safety.
The latest arrests come amid intensified security operations across Edo State aimed at curbing recurring incidents of cult-related violence and restoring peace in affected communities.
