Eight killed in insurgent attack on military outpost in Borno
Five soldiers and three members of a local vigilante group were killed in the early hours of Friday after suspected insurgents attacked a military outpost in Borno State, security sources have confirmed.
The assault targeted a forward operating base in Mandaragirau community, Biu Local Government Area, which falls under the operational control of the 25 Task Force Brigade, Sector 2, in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.
According to military and local accounts, armed fighters suspected to be members of Boko Haram launched a coordinated night attack, overrunning parts of the base in a sudden ambush that triggered a fierce exchange of gunfire with troops on duty.
Among the dead were three operatives of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), a local volunteer group that supports the military with intelligence gathering and community-level security assistance.
Security analysts say the incident reflects a growing pattern of coordinated night-time attacks by remnants of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), who have increasingly targeted isolated military positions across Borno and neighbouring Yobe States in recent months.
Military reinforcements have since been deployed to Mandaragirau and surrounding communities, while search-and-clear operations are ongoing in nearby areas to track down the attackers.
As of press time, the Defence Headquarters had yet to issue an official statement confirming the casualty figures or detailing equipment losses from the attack.
