In a major political realignment that has sent shockwaves through Akwa Ibom State’s political landscape, Governor Umo Eno has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement came on Friday morning during a press conference at the Government House in Uyo, where Governor Eno cited the need for “a more unified and development-driven political structure” as a major reason for his decision.
“This is not a decision I took lightly,” Governor Eno stated. “After wide consultations with stakeholders, supporters, and leaders across the state and country, I believe the APC offers the platform that aligns more closely with my vision for the sustainable development of Akwa Ibom State.”
Governor Eno’s defection marks a significant shift in the state’s political alignment, especially as the PDP has maintained a stronghold in Akwa Ibom since the return of democracy in 1999.

Top APC officials, including the party’s national chairman and several serving ministers, were present at the event to formally welcome the governor into the party. In his welcome remarks, the APC national chairman described the governor’s defection as “a bold step towards unity and progress.”
Political analysts say the move could reshape the political dynamics in the South-South region, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reactions have begun to pour in from both PDP loyalists and APC supporters. While some within the PDP have expressed disappointment over the governor’s exit, others in the APC are celebrating it as a major political gain.
Governor Eno, who was elected on the platform of the PDP in 2023, did not indicate whether he would seek re-election under the APC or remain focused on completing his term under the new party.
As of press time, the PDP has yet to issue an official statement on the governor’s defection.
