Ijaw Diaspora Council launches fund raising for flood victims in Niger Delta
The Ijaw nation in the Diaspora, under the aegis of Ijaw Diaspora Council (IDC), has launched fund raising to assist victims of flooding in the Niger State states in Nigeria. President of IDC, Prof. Mondy Gold, in a media interaction, expressed that the Ijaw nation in Diaspora shared the pains of their kith and kin at home, having empathy with them, and the members are, therefore, coordinating humanitarian interventions for flood victims in the Niger Delta.
The IDC’s Director of Humanitarian Services, Dr. Antonia Garner, was said to be coordinating the emergency relief fund raising, with the members and donor agencies.
Acknowledging that the flood affected about 33 states across the country, Gold stated that people living in the lower Niger basin were the worst hit by flooding, as the rivers overflowed their banks and damaged infrastructure and farmlands.
The IDC president, commending the Niger- Delta people for their resilience, emphasized that their Diaspora kinsmen have planned to complement the efforts of state governments in the Niger-Delta, noting that the needs of the flood victims have become overwhelming.
