I’m not chasing power, I want Nigeria to function – Peter Obi
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he is not driven by desperation to occupy Nigeria’s highest political office, insisting that his ambition is rooted in a deeper desire to see the country function effectively for its citizens.
Obi made the remarks during an interview on the Nevon HQ Podcast, hosted by journalist and media personality Rufai Oseni, where he reflected on his political aspirations and concerns about Nigeria’s socio-economic condition.
The former Anambra State governor stressed that his focus is not on acquiring power for personal ambition, but on addressing the systemic challenges that continue to hinder national development.
“I am not desperate to be president of Nigeria. I am desperate to see Nigeria work,” Obi said during the interview.
He explained that his political drive is motivated by concern for ordinary Nigerians, particularly young people who continue to struggle with unemployment, poverty, and limited economic opportunities.

Obi lamented what he described as widespread hardship across the country, noting that many citizens are finding it increasingly difficult to sustain their livelihoods in the face of rising living costs and economic uncertainty.
“I am desperate to see young people have a means of livelihood. I am desperate to see people stop stealing public money. I am desperate to see Nigeria work,” he added.
According to him, Nigeria’s challenges go beyond politics and require sincere leadership commitment to rebuild trust in governance, curb corruption, and create an enabling environment for productivity and growth.
Obi reiterated that his public service aspirations remain anchored on the belief that Nigeria can be transformed into a functioning and prosperous nation if leaders prioritize the welfare of citizens over personal or political interests.
