INEC does not recognize factions, only political parties – REC
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned political actors that the commission does not recognize factions but only has the mandate to relate with political parties in the country.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Oyo State, Mutiu Agboke, at a meeting with parties stakeholders in Ibadan, Oyo State, southwest, Nigeria, warned that the commission should not be accused of serving the interest of some individuals or factions of a political party, than the main party structure.
“However, let it also be on record that INEC has a mandate to relate to all political parties and not factional groups or groups as recently experienced with a particular political party,” he declared.
The REC assured that INEC supports the controversial direct primaries provision in the Electoral Amendment Act if President Muhammadu Buhari assents to it.
The Oyo REC disclosed that about 133,557 people visited the commission’s official website, while only 60,641 have completed their registration since the second quarter of the continuous registration exercise.
He said that over 400,000 registered voters have not received their Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) out of the over two million registered voters in Oyo State.
