Lai Mohammed recounts emotional final moments with Buhari
Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has paid a deeply emotional tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing his death as a “personal loss” and recalling their final meetings before Buhari’s passing in London on Sunday, July 13, following a prolonged illness.
In a heartfelt statement personally signed and released on Monday, Lai Mohammed reflected on the profound bond he shared with Buhari, under whom he served for eight years as the administration’s chief spokesman.
“With his passing, I have lost not just a leader and a boss, but a mentor, pillar of support, and father figure,” Lai Mohammed wrote.
He lauded Buhari as more than a statesman, highlighting his humanity, empathy, and unwavering support throughout their time in office.
“Many have rightly described him as a rare patriot, incorruptible leader, and humble statesman. But to me, he was also a true humanist who prioritized the well-being of others in everything he did,” he added.
The former minister recalled Buhari’s constant concern for his welfare during turbulent times, stating that despite the immense pressures of the presidency, Buhari always asked about his well-being.
“On one occasion, he publicly remarked, ‘I pity Lai Mohammed,’” he reminisced. “His trust in me gave me strength in my most difficult moments.”
Lai Mohammed disclosed that their final physical meeting took place during Ramadan in Kaduna, months before Buhari’s death. Though the former president was not receiving visitors that day, he made an exception.
“We spent many hours together, just the two of us. Little did I know it would be our last meeting on this side of the great divide.”

He also revealed that he maintained regular communication with Buhari even after the former president retired to Daura, Katsina State, and had visited him there, staying for three nights.
Following news of Buhari’s illness and subsequent evacuation to London for treatment, Lai said he monitored his condition closely through aides while also offering prayers for his recovery.
“It was truly a privilege for me to have known and worked with him,” he concluded. “I pray Almighty God forgives his shortcomings and grants him Aljannah Firdaus.”
Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently leading a government delegation to London to oversee the return of Buhari’s remains ahead of his Tuesday burial in Daura.
President Bola Tinubu has declared seven days of national mourning, while Katsina State observed a public holiday on Monday in honour of the late former president.
